Therapeutic Levels of Anti-Aging Ingredients

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D has long provided significant support for healthy bone density. However, scientists have also validated the critical role that vitamin D plays in regulating healthy cell division and differentiation, and its profound effects on human immunity. These findings link a deficiency of vitamin D to a host of common age-related problems. The current RDA is only 400 IU. As a result of startling evidence of a widespread vitamin D deficiency, prominent nutritional scientists are calling on Americans to increase their vitamin D intake to 1000 IU per day and higher. Currently, most experts in the field believe that intakes of between 1000 and 4000 IU for adults will lead to a more healthy level of serum.

Vitamin B2

It is required by the body to use oxygen and the metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates. Riboflavin is further needed to activate vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), helps to create niacin and assists the adrenal gland. It may be used for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration, and growth.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is one of 8 B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body convert food (carbohydrates) into fuel (glucose), which is "burned" to produce energy. These B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, also help the body metabolize fats and protein. B complex vitamins are necessary for healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver. They also help the nervous system function properly.

Along with vitamins B12 and B9 (folic acid), B6 helps control levels of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is an amino acid that may be associated with heart disease. B6 is also necessary for proper absorption of vitamin B12 and for the production of red blood cells and cells of the immune system.

Folic Acid

What is folic acid?

  • Folic acid, also called folate or folacin, is a B vitamin often lacking in the diet.
  • When consumed in adequate amounts by women before and during pregnancy, folic acid reduces the risk of serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called neural tube defects.
  • Folates also are needed for cell growth and blood production. As a fetus grows, it takes folates from the mother’s blood, which in turn creates a shortage in the mother.
  • Because of their control over homocysteine, an amino acid produced by the body, folates are thought to give some protection against heart disease. High levels of homocysteine in the blood may be a risk factor for heart attacks.
  • Additional health benefits associated with folic acid consumption include reduction in depression, colon, cervical, and breast cancers. It also may help prevent memory loss and susceptibility to Parkinson’s disease.

Vitamin B12

also called cobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production. As the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin, it can be produced industrially only through bacterial fermentation-synthesis.

Biotin

Biotin is an essential water-soluble B vitamin. The name biotin is taken from the Greek word bios meaning "life." Without biotin, certain enzymes do not work properly and various complications can occur involving the skin, intestinal tract, and nervous system. Metabolic problems including very low blood sugars between meals, high blood ammonia, or acidic blood (acidosis) can occur. Death is theoretically possible, although no clear cases have been reported. Recent studies suggest that biotin is also necessary for processes on the genetic level in cells (DNA replication and gene expression).

Pantothenic Acid

Vitamin B5 is essential for human growth, reproduction and many normal bodily processes. Vitamin B5 helps metabolize nutrients, manufacture antibodies and produce vitamin D. It also stimulates the healing of wounds. Pantothenic acid is involved in a number of biological reactions, including the production of energy, the catabolism of fatty acids and amino acids, the synthesis of fatty acids, lipids, cholesterol and steroid hormones, and the production of both coenzyme A, and the cellular antioxidant glutathione. Vitamin B5 is critical to the manufacture of red blood cells as well as sex and stress-related hormones produced in the adrenal glands (small glands that sit atop of the kidneys). Supplements are sometimes used to treat symptoms of allergy and a wide range of skin conditions.

Selenium

Selenium is an essential mineral found in trace amounts in the body. It works as an antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E, by scavenging damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. Free radicals can damage cell membranes and DNA, and may contribute to aging and a number of conditions, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants, such as selenium, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Selenium plays a role in thyroid function and is needed for the immune system to work properly. People with a number of conditions, ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to some types of cancer, often have low levels of selenium. However, in most cases scientists aren't sure whether low selenium levels are a cause or an effect of the disease.

Chromium Polynicotinate

Chromium polynicotinate is an equally effective assimilated form of chromium which some researchers suggest may have more benefits for certain conditions than does the picolinate form. A recent study on antidepressant pharmacotherapy for dysthymic disorder (depression) in 5 patients showed that chromium polynicotinate supplementation led to remission of dysthymic symptoms and concluded that preliminary observations suggest that chromium may potentate antidepressant pharmacotherapy for dysthymic disorder. Another study on chromium polynicotinate in rats prevented the sucrose-induced elevation of systolic blood pressure and decreased measures of lipid peroxidation.

Both forms of chromium reduce high serum glucose levels which can contribute to aging via a destructive process known as glycosylation, also called nonenzymatic glycation, in which glucose molecules bind to proteins and interfere with their function. People with diabetes have a highly increased rate of protein glycosylation and this plays a major part in their increased risk of atherosclerosis and many other diseases. For many with diabetes, chromium enhances the ability of insulin to lower serum glucose levels.

Ribonucleic Acid

RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a nucleic acid that is found in the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells, where it plays an important part in protein synthesis and cellular renewal. Adequate amounts of RNA in the body are essential to every aspect of good health and well-being. Supplementation with RNA derived from yeast may support healthy cellular division, replication and repair; and help boost the immune system response.

Pomegranate Extract

Pomegranate extract is primarily composed of alkaloids and polyphenols. The active constituent that appears to be responsible for its multiple health benefits is Ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic compound found in several fruits and nuts. Pomegranate extract has demonstrated a variety of beneficial functions including antioxidant and anti-viral activity. In 1996, a Nottingham, PA University research team learned that pomegranate extract could destroy several viruses nearly on contact. The discovery of this anti-viral activity instigated further experimentation and clinical trials. One study confirmed that Ellagic acid effectively protects cells from damaging free radicals. Additional phenolic compounds found in pomegranate known as anthocynadins (also well known scavengers of free radicals) combine synergistically with Ellagic acid to greatly augment pomegranate's potency as an antioxidant.

Of great importance is the pomegranate extracts potential use as a chemo-preventive agent. Initial experimentation by Stoner and Mukhtar showed that Ellagic acid decreased the number of chemically induced lung tumors by 44-75%. Mukhtar further illustrated that topical application of Ellagic acid provided protection against chemically induced skin tumors.

Ellagic acid has several mechanisms of actions by which it exhibits its chemo-preventive properties. Research by Barch et al. Demonstrated that Ellagic acid could actually bind to DNA, thus preventing its carcinogenic alteration. Additionally, Ellagic acid has been shown to induce the production of phase 11 detoxification enzymes through its manipulation of gene expression. With an increased concentration of these enzymes, various tissues ability to detoxify harmful compounds is augmented. Finally, Ellagic acid was found to be a potent inhibitor of tyrosine protein kinase, a molecule whose activity has been associated with the ability of certain viruses to transform normal cells into cancerous cells.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is the minimally altered ester form of carnitine, a natural substance which the body synthesizes from the amino acids lysine and methionine. ALCAR has been found to be more effective in performing the beneficial functions of carnitine, particularly as they relate to the health and efficiency of the mitochondria. The three enzymes, which assist the mitochondria in producing the maximum energy from food oxidation, decrease as the body ages, allowing for more frequent occasions of free radical pathology. One of these enzymes is a complex directly responsible for practically all oxygen consumption in humans. As age causes the levels of this enzyme to drop, the levels of the body's master energy chemical, ATP, is also decreased. ALCAR is able to restore the efficacy of these enzymes in laboratory animals, thereby boosting mitochondrial energy to youthful levels and reversing the cellular damage that is the result of aging.

L-Carnitine

Carnitine is a nutrient that helps the body turn fat into energy. It is produced by the body in the liver and kidneys and stored in the skeletal muscles, heart, brain, and sperm.

Usually, the body can make all the carnitine it needs. Some people, however, may be deficient in carnitine because their bodies cannot make enough carnitine or transport it into tissues so it can be used. Some other conditions, such as angina or intermittent claudication, can also cause insufficient carnitine in the body, as can some medications.

Carnitine has been proposed as a treatment for many conditions because it helps reduce oxidative stress. Some of the conditions carnitine may help treat are serious, and in those cases, you should take the supplement under the supervision of your doctor, as an adjunct therapy to conventional medicine.

DMAE

DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol) is known to stabilize cell membranes. Cell membrane degradation has been proposed as one of the prime mechanisms of normal aging. DMAE is a precursor to choline and acetylcholine. It is the choline inside cells that is converted to phosphatidyl-choline, used in the building and repair of cell membranes, especially in the brain.

PABA

Para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA, is a naturally occurring, water-soluble non-protein amino acid, which is found in many foods (grains, eggs, milk, and meat) as a co-factor of the vitamin B complex (associated with folate). It has been used by some people to re-pigment the hair and was used in sunscreens for years because of its ability to absorb ultraviolet (UVB) light. As an antioxidant, PABA also provides protection against ozone, smoking, and other air pollutants which damage cell structures and membranes through oxidative stress.

L-Carnosine

Carnosine is a combination of two important amino acids, beta-alanine and L-histidine. It occurs naturally in the human body (mainly in muscle) and can also be found in many animals. Carnosine is easily broken down into beta-alanine and L-histidine, but the remarkable thing is that these two amino acids now work much more efficiently than they would have done if they hadn't combined to form L-Carnosine in the first place! While still combined together as L-Carnosine it has the unique ability to rejuvenate cells i.e. to make old cells younger and extend their life-cycle. L-Carnosine is the only compound commercially available that possesses this very rare and unique ability.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid found naturally inside every cell in the body. It's needed by the body to produce the energy for our body's normal functions. Alpha lipoic acid converts glucose (blood sugar) into energy.

Alpha lipoic acid is also an antioxidant, a substance that neutralizes potentially harmful chemicals called free radicals.
